Installation Difficulty:

Empire Performance Engineering in conjunction with GoGo Diesel/Direct Injection work diligently together to deliver a solid solution. The 5R110 TorqShift transmission is one of the most robust transmissions ever offered in a medium duty pickup. It does however have a weakness. The 5R110 transmission is controlled through the use of solenoids to turn on and off gears. A gear is commanded by the computer and a solenoid applies fluid directly to that clutch. In stock power applications the stock solenoid is fine. Outside of that range, the factory piece cannot provide enough fluid to the clutch fast enough to get the clutches together in a short enough time. Long term slipping of the clutch leads to failure. Direct clutch is not only used for 5th gear in the transmission, but it is also used when in reverse as well. All solenoids are modified from brand new parts and are then tested in house on a Solx 2000 Solenoid tester. View Installation Video At The Bottom Of Page

Do you have this code?  P0766.

The DTC description in the tuner is...

0766  P0766    Shift Solenoid D Performance/Stuck Off

The Actual Description is this...

It DOES NOT mean the solenoid is stuck off.  It means.  It doesn't know if there is a performance issue with the clutch pack or if the solenoid is stuck.   OFF means the PCM is turning OFF that clutch to prevent further damage.

Shift Solenoids

The Shift Solenoid (SSA, SSB, SSC, SSD, and SSE) output circuits are checked for opens and shorts by the PCM by monitoring the status of a feedback circuit from the output driver (SSA P0750, P0973, P0974; SSB P0755, P0976, P0977; SSC P0760, P0979, P0980; SSD P0765, P0982, P0983; SSE P0770, P0985, P0986).

The shift solenoids will be tested for function. This is determined by vehicle inputs such as gear command, and gear.

Shift solenoid malfunction codes actually cover the entire clutch system (using ratio there is no way to isolate the solenoid from the rest of the clutch system. Diagnostics will isolate the fault into clutch functionally (nonelectrical failed off (SSA P0751, SSB P0756, SSC P0761, SSD P0766, SSE P0771) and clutch functionally failed on (SSA: P0752, SSB: P0757, SSC: P0762, SSD: P0767, SSE: P0772).

These fault codes replace the P2700 level clutch fault codes previously used since the additional information of the failed state of the clutch adds value for service.

When Does Direct Clutch Apply?

Direct clutch is only applied with the solenoid when you are in 5th gear and 6th gear.

When you select reverse with the shifter.   Direct Clutch is applied through the Manual Valve in the solenoid body.  It bypasses the solenoid.  The solenoid is just there to keep the pressure in the clutch.

If you have gotten to the point of direct clutch slippage.  The solenoid more than likely IS NOT the problem.

There is only so much the tune can do. This allows you to mechanically circumvent the calibration. This product is designed to prevent the transmission failure before the problem is caused or created.  This product will also benefit stock applications.
